Kusi Kawsay Andean School project: Roman Vizcarra and Fielding Wood de Vizcarra co-founded this Waldorf inspired school initiative based in the local Andean traditions. Kusi Kawsay means “happy life” in the Quechua language. Happy life is rooted in the Andean heritage and supports a way of life which promotes empowerment of ecologically and environmentally friendly consciousness. The symbol of the school is the hummingbird. The hummingbird - tiny and fragile, yet strong - is able to travel great distances to achieve its goals and unite worlds. The hummingbird can be still while active, beating its wings while staying calmly in one place. Kusi Kawsay teaches the local children in Spanish, English and Quechua.

Through Journey with Sube they received a Sube English kit and teacher training to help them with their newly formed English class.

"I use Sube to teach English at the Kusi Kawsay School in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Pisac, Peru. It is so wonderful ~ a comprehensive, interactive and complete method! It has made teaching English so much more fun and effective. I am so thankful to have this tool. Urpillay Sonqollay!" Fielding Vizcarra

Deaf and Blind Service Project.  Since 2006, Pamela Broido has been traveling twice a year to either Belize or Nicaragua to start a small project to help children who are living in impoverished conditions, and who also happen to be blind, deaf or challenged in some way. She been invited by schools and special educators of both countries to conduct teacher trainings and work side by side with them in their classrooms.

With the support of donors, she shares donated materials so that these children might receive their first and only book or game, something that is out of the financial reach for most children and their families. With these donations, she purchases dictionaries, Braille materials, reading and math curriculum and games like dominoes so that these children might continue their studies with appropriate materials.

Through Journey with Sube she has received Sube reader books, games and puzzles for San Judas School for the Deaf and Blind and the Nicaraguan Deaf Association in Managua, and a Belize City School system for the Deaf called Stella Maris.

"Thank you for wonderful materials that are durable, well conceived and intelligently delivered. Your reading materials have been used in Belize and Nicaragua at the deaf/blind school. They are perfect for early learners of second language learners. Bravo!" Pamela Broido

Sri Lanka Reunion

preserving cultural knowledge

Rushan Perrera is from Sri Lanka living in Taos New Mexico. He has a 12 year old daughter, Nadeeka who has never met her 80 year old Grandmother, Soma. Soma lives in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and has raised 8 children on her own. Now weak and frail, Rushan feared Nadeeka and Soma would never meet and organized a fundraiser to make the reunion possible.

Maintaining the relationship with our grandparents is an important link in preserving language and cultural knowledge. It takes great effort for parents to make this happen. Many times, financial challenges make it impossible. The Journey with Sube project donated to Rushan's fundraiser along with hundreds more in our small community of Taos, making this dream possible. We share his story in hopes that other parents might be inspired to reach out to the elders in their families. This simple act has global humanitarian significance as expressed beautifully by Terra Lingua, an organization that we have also supported to help raise awareness to the important work that they do.

"Biocultural diversity is the interlinked diversity of nature and culture: the millions of species of plants and animals that have evolved on earth, and the thousands of different cultures and languages that humans have developed by interacting closely with one another and with the natural environment. Biocultural diversity is the pulsating heart of the globe, the multi-faceted expression of the beauty and potential of life on this planet—a precious gift for everyone to cherish and care for."
