This kit is age-appropriate for preschool through 5th grade students who are at a beginner proficiency level. This means that the same beginner Spanish box is used for PK to 5th grade levels as along as they are at the same proficiency level. Beginner Kit Themes

The SUBE curriculum is organized into eight themes/units. The themes for the Level A-Beginner kit are Animals, Food, Home, Verbs, Body, Clothes, Places and Opposites. Woven into these core themes and reinforced throughout the curriculum are the primary topics; colors, numbers, shapes, the alphabet, and phonics activities. Each SUBE theme integrates a series of multisensory activities that reinforce the vocabulary and skills for that unit. Each theme/unit includes four one-hour lessons. These can be used to teach two 30 minute classes, or a one hour class. For bilingual teachers using the curriculum every day, the manual includes additional activities that are added to the basic lesson module.

What They Will Learn

Depending on age, developmental readiness and allocated class time, the Sube curriculum can take students to beginner or early intermediate level proficiency.

Students at the Beginning proficiency level are able to:

• Comprehend high-frequency words and basic phrases in immediate physical, concrete surroundings
• Produce learned words and phrases
• Use gestures to communicate basic needs
• Interact with frequently used Spanish print in a limited fashion
• Demonstrate initial Spanish print awareness

Evaluation Tools

To help assess and track individual students progress toward these goals, the Sube curriculum provides a series of tools which we call the Accountability Pack. These include the Benchmark Evaluation Chart and Unit Tests. When using the Beginner Spanish Kit across grade levels, these charts are also used to help transition students from one grade to the next, and to determine areas of strength and weakness.

Sube Methodology

Sube is a thematic curriculum based on multisensory materials and activities that incorporate successful and research-based teaching strategies. The Sube methodology is a balanced curriculum that provides opportunities to develop comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills simultaneously in each unit. This approach creates a safe and creative environment that nurtures the students confidence, and develops a positive self-esteem around their new language.

The Sube Learning language thru Art, Music & Games program is based on years of research on how to teach a second language effectively in the classroom. It has been field tested successfully in classrooms nationwide during which time we have developed new and excting techniques and strategies that accelerate learning and make the process of teaching and learning a second language easy and fun. Sube incorporates unique activities and techniques based on various language theories and methodologies that have proven successful in second language instruction. In addition, Sube was founded on the valuable lessons learned from children raised in bilingual homes, where the native language and second language are introduced simultaneously.

Sube is foremost based on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner, and is strongly influenced by the *Communicative language teachng views which began in Britain in the 1960s. Standard Alignment

Sube Beginner Spanish correlates to state and national standards. We include in the lesson manual a copy of the standards and a convenient chart that links each Sube activity to its standard and benchmark. This making it easy for you to customize your lessons and still have the corresponding benchmarks readily available.

We have aligned with New Mexico state standards as well as with TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages) standards. We found that TESOL standards are comprehensive and effective, and easily transfer to Spanish language learning. The NM state standards can easily be correlated to other state standards.
