What They Will Learn

Depending on age, developmental readiness and allocated class time, the Sube curriculum can take students to intermediate or early intermediate or early advanced level proficiency.

Intermediate Level Proficiency

Students at at the intermediate level of Spanish-language proficiency begin to refashion learned material to meet
their immediate communication and learning needs. Students at the Intermediate Proficiency Level are
able to:

• Comprehend information on familiar topics in contextualized settings
• Produce sustained conversation with others on a variety of general topics
• Interact independently with a variety of simplified print examples
• Write basic information and expand responses in contextualized settings
• Comprehend main ideas and basic concepts in content areas
• Express a variety of personal and safety needs
• Respond to questions using short sentences
• Initiate simple conversations with English speakers outside of school

Early Advanced Proficiency Level
Students at the early advanced level of Spanish-language proficiency begin to utilize the Spanish language in
more complex, cognitively demanding situations and are able to use Spanish as a means for learning in
other academic areas. Students at the Early Advanced Proficiency Level are able to:

• Comprehend detailed information with fewer contextual clues on unfamiliar topics
•  Produce, initiate and sustain spontaneous language interactions using circumlocution when necessary
•  Interact with increasingly complex written material while relying on context and prior knowledge to
obtain meaning from print
•  Write to satisfy limited social and academic needs through the recombination of learned vocabulary
and structures
• Participate actively in all content areas
• Express more complex feelings, needs and opinions using extended oral and written production
• Participate actively in non-academic settings that require English

Evaluation Tools

To help assess and track individual students progress toward these goals, the Sube curriculum provides a Benchmark Evaluation Chart and Unit Tests. When using the Intermediate Spanish Kit across grade levels, this charts is also used to help transition students from one grade to the next, and to determine areas of strength and weakness.

Sube Methodology

Sube is a thematic curriculum based on multisensory materials and activities that incorporate successful and research-based teaching strategies. The Sube methodology is a balanced curriculum that provides opportunities to develop comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills simultaneously in each unit. This approach creates a safe and creative environment that nurtures the students confidence, and develops a positive self-esteem around their new language.

The Sube Learning language thru Art, Music & Games program is based on years of research on how to teach a second language effectively in the classroom. It has been field tested successfully in classrooms nationwide during which time we have developed new and excting techniques and strategies that accelerate learning and make the process of teaching and learning a second language easy and fun. Sube incorporates unique activities and techniques based on various language theories and methodologies that have proven successful in second language instruction. In addition, Sube was founded on the valuable lessons learned from children raised in bilingual homes, where the native language and second language are introduced simultaneously.

Sube is foremost based on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner, and is strongly influenced by the *Communicative language teachng views which began in Britain in the 1960s. The Sube Methodology outline provides a detailed explanation of the theories and research that formed the Sube program and how we have developed strategies and techniques based on this research.
